I am a small-scale hedgehog breeder located in Newmarket, Ontario.

Health is #1:

Our goal here at Spiky Potatoes is first and foremost, to improve the health of the species. These little guys too often suffer from all types of ailments and diseases, on top of their already short lifespan of 3-5 years. It takes selective breeding and meticulous lineage tracking to improve the species’ overall well-being. Animals who are predisposed to certain health issues are excluded from our breeding program.

Temperament is #2:

3 out of my 4 hedgehogs are from a reputable breeder (Hedgehog Ville). Each girl has a unique personality and their own kind of spunkiness. My 4th hedgehog, Coconut, came from a rescue situation. I learned how much of a challenge it was to care for a reactive hog. It was months and months of very little progress. The importance of temperament was clear. Difficult hedgehogs are harder to care for (cutting nails, baths, etc.) and thus are less likely to be handled. New owners can be left with a disappointing experience.

Our goal in breeding for temperament is to ensure both you and your potato are set up for success! While hedgehogs are prey animals who are timid by nature, a relationship can still be built. Trust and consistency is important. It requires us to work together, starting with positive handling experiences here at Spiky Potatoes, and continued socializing and bonding once they go home with you :)
